Many mountaineers group their goals in terms of some common theme: peaks in a certain area, or with a certain elevation or prominence, or with routes requiring certain skills. This page describes a few of the more popular ideas, but don’t let your peakbagging be pigeon-holed!

The “Chugach State Park 120”

The collection of peaks frequently referred to as the ‘Chugach 120’ are 120 peaks located inside the Chugach State Park with roughly 500 feet or more of prominence. The list was created by Steve Gruhn in the early 1990s and adopted into local mountaineering culture as a challenge of skill and commitment. Glacial recession and more accurate measurement techniques mean that this list might not include every peak inside the Park boundary with 500 feet of prominence at this point in time. In the words of Bob Ross, “that’s okay.”

The “Front Range Linkup”

If the '120' is a marathon, this is a sprint. Connect the 12 peaks in the Chugach Front Range with elevations of over 5000 feet in one trip. First completed by Renaissance Man Shawn Lyons (1955-2021, RIP), this challenge has become exponentially more popular in recent years.
